CHAPTER 20

SANDEN

As much as I hate—no, loathe—cleaning the rigs, coming to Station 21 during a day shift when I have an overnighter tonight is still better than admitting Remy’s firehouse is better than ours.

Of course, with Remy having switched out for morning starts, I’m sure he only has a tiny bit to do with why I’m happy I lost. I couldn’t ask for a date in the bet, but at least this way, I get to spend time with him.

He and his work buddies are watching me, arms folded, with amusement on their faces.

“Why do I feel like you all want me to strip off while I do this? You’re looking at me with this look of lust in your eyes, and I’m sorry to tell you, none of you are my type.”

Remy’s face falls but slowly, like he thinks that’s subtle.

“Actually, I take that back. Nearly all of you aren’t my type.” I wink at Remy. “Finnigan is superhot.”

Finnigan gives me the finger and walks away while Remy laughs.

The small group disperses, but Remy steps toward me. “I can’t believe how long it’s taking you to wash one truck. You’ve still got another one to go, plus my ambulance.”

“I’m not slow. I’m thorough. Can’t be tearing down the street in a rig that’s covered in dirt and grime. How unprofessional would that be?”

“Mmhmm.”

“It has nothing to do with getting to hang out with you, so I’m dragging it out. Not at all.”

Remy picks up one of the spare cloths. “If you wanted to spend time with me, you could’ve asked. Now you’re guilting me into helping you, and this all could’ve been avoided if you had asked me out. You’re making me do my job, Sanden, and I’m not happy.”

I’ve been dying to ask him out for years, but he’s the one who’s going to have to do it. “You know what I love about being gay?”

“Aside from all the dicks?”

“Aside from that. It’s that there are no set roles. No who should ask out who. There’s the whole societal thing of it being emasculating to have a woman do the asking and all that other heteronormative bullshit that makes me shake my head.” I stop wiping down the truck and cross to where he’s working on the opposite corner. “If I knew you were ready for me to ask you out, I’d do it in a heartbeat, but as far as I know, you’re still conflicted. Don’t know who or what to trust. So I’m afraid the asking is going to be on you. And I will wait forever if I have to because the main thing you need is no pressure from me.”

“Go out with me,” Remy blurts. “Please, fuck, I need to go out with you.”

“Ah. That was my other tactic. Make you want me until you’re so desperate to go out with me. I have you right where I want you.” I try for a deep, wicked laugh, but it comes out more like the Count from Sesame Street.
